    Your trip

Fill these in and press "Build my list". Everything is optional: without them the list is for two adults, two nights, in a tent.

Building a list replaces the one you have. "Undo" under the form brings the old one back.

    Packing list

Change any amount, remove what you do not need, and add your own items. "Start a new section" begins a fresh heading such as "Fishing".

    Notes

Fire rules, check-in time, the ranger station's number, who brings what.

    How to use this checklist

    1. Describe the trip. Choose tent, RV or backpacking, and enter the nights and the number of adults and children.
    2. Build the list. The amounts follow the trip: a change of socks and underwear per person per day, a gallon of drinking water per person per day, a meal per person per night, a tent for every four people (two when backpacking).
    3. Make it yours. Remove what you will not bring, change amounts, and add anything missing, such as fishing gear or a dog bed.
    4. Print it. Tick the boxes as items go into the car or the pack. Keep it for the trip home too: it is a good way to check nothing is left behind.

    The essentials people forget

    • A lighter and matches. Bring two ways to light the stove; one always runs out or gets wet.
    • A headlamp for everyone. Dark comes early in the woods, and one shared flashlight leads to arguments.
    • Trash bags. Most campsites ask you to pack out what you bring in.
    • A warm layer and a rain jacket, even in summer. Nights outdoors are colder than they feel at home.
    • Paper directions and booking details. Many campsites have no phone signal.

    Tent, RV and backpacking lists

Tent camping by car has the longest list, because weight hardly matters: chairs, a table, a big cooler and a two-burner stove all fit in the trunk.

RV or camper trips skip the tent and sleeping pads and add the hookup gear: a drinking-water hose, a pressure regulator, the sewer hose, a power adapter and leveling blocks.

Backpacking lists are about weight: one pot, a small stove, a water filter instead of jugs of water, two shirts instead of one for every day, and a bear canister or food bag where the park requires one.

    Camping with kids

Enter the number of children and the list adds a section for them: two spare sets of clothes each (they will get wet or muddy), a comfort toy for bedtime, something to play, and glow sticks, which make it easy to spot small people after dark. Their sleeping bags, plates, headlamps and clothes are counted in with everyone else's.

    Questions

    Is the camping checklist free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email and no watermark on the printout.

How much water should I bring camping?

Plan on about one gallon (four liters) per person per day for drinking and cooking, and more in hot weather or if there is no water at the campsite. When backpacking, carry less and treat water from streams with a filter or tablets.

Can I make a checklist for one night or a week?

Yes. Enter any number of nights; the clothes, food, fuel, firewood and toilet paper change with it.

Can I print an empty checklist?

Yes. "Blank copy" prints the layout with empty lines and tick boxes to fill in by hand.

    Is my list saved?

Only in your own browser, so you can come back to it on the same device. Nothing is sent to this site. "Clear everything" removes it.
